Laser Hair Removal Q & A
How does laser hair removal work?
Dr. Miles uses a laser that emits light energy, which travels through your skin to the pigment in your hair follicle. The light energy impairs your follicle’s ability to grow hair.
Because not of all your hair grows at the same rate, your hair follicles are in different stages of growth. Hair follicles that are in the anagen, or active-growth, phase respond the best to the laser treatment. This is because these follicles have more pigment and absorb more light energy. Hair follicles that are in the dormant phase won’t respond to that treatment session. This is why laser hair removal therapy requires multiple sessions to get the best results.
What are the advantages of using the Cynosure® Elite+™ Laser?
The Elite+™ laser system is fast, effective and safe. It uses two proven laser wavelengths that treat people of all skin types. One of the wavelengths is better for those with lighter skin, and the other for people with darker skin. The scope of the Elite+ laser can also widen or narrow, so it’s effective whether Dr. Miles is treating a larger area such as your back or chest, or she’s working on your upper lip. The Elite+ system has been in clinical use for many years and has been proven safe in many clinical publications.
How should you prepare for a laser hair removal session?
You should shave the area Dr. Miles will be treating prior to your procedure. This allows the laser device to effectively deliver the light energy to your hair follicles, resulting in a more effective treatment.
During the treatment, Dr. Miles will guide the device over your treatment area. You’ll experience cool air blowing for added comfort. The process shouldn’t hurt, but it might feel like a rubber band is snapping slightly on your skin as Dr. Miles delivers the energy.
What should you expect following your laser hair removal session?
The hair follicles that are in the active-growth stage will be damaged, and hairs in those follicles at the time of treatment will fall out over the next couple of weeks. Future hair growth will be impaired.
As the follicles in the transitional and resting periods return to active growth, you may notice some hair regrowth. However, it won’t be as thick as it was before your treatment. Your hair will get thinner and lighter with each subsequent treatment until there is little to no hair at all.
Ditch the razors and the tweezers for good. Call Skin Oasis Dermatology or schedule an appointment online.
