PRP Treatment Q & A

What is PRP treatment?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment involves using natural growth factors in your plasma to help with issues like hair restoration or skin rejuvenation. This innovative and nonsurgical treatment stimulates your body to grow new healthy cells when PRP is injected into the damaged tissue. PRP helps your body to heal itself naturally. Because you’re not using foreign substances, your risk of side effects or an allergic reaction is extremely low.

How can PRP treatments help with skin rejuvenation?

When Dr. Miles injects the PRP into specific areas of your skin, new collagen begins to grow and tissue regenerates. Your skin starts to tighten naturally, smoothing out wrinkles.

Because PRP stimulates your own collagen to grow, you get a total facial rejuvenation rather than just eliminating individual wrinkles one by one. PRP is also used elsewhere in cosmetic dermatology, for:

  • Face volumizing
  • Plumping out cheek indentations
  • Softening the dark hollows under your eyes
  • Evening out sun damage and scarring
  • Improving your skin tone and texture

How can PRP treatments help with hair restoration?

PRP hair restoration is an innovative and nonsurgical option for hair regrowth. PRP has successfully treated conditions like androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. There is cautious optimism that even individuals with scarring hair loss such as central centrifugal scarring alopecia may benefit from PRP.

What should you expect during PRP treatments?

The procedure starts with drawing a small sample of your blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the platelet-rich plasma component from the rest of your blood. While the PRP is being prepared, your skin will be cleansed and prepared for the treatment. Dr. Miles will then spend a few moments injecting the PRP into your affected area, using an ultrasound for accuracy.

The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes and requires no downtime afterward. You might experience some mild swelling, redness, or bruising, but those side effects will fade in 1-3 days. Because the PRP is made from your own blood cells, it virtually eliminates the possibility of negative side effects.

What results should you expect following your PRP treatment for skin rejuvenation?

You can expect to notice your skin improving 3-4 weeks after the treatment. While Botox and other filler treatments break down with time, the PRP results improve for 18-24 months. Dr. Miles usually recommends three treatment sessions to get the best outcome.

Some patients choose to receive PRP therapy plus other cosmetic services, like dermal fillers or laser therapy. Restylane® and Juvéderm® fill specific lines and folds; PRP improves overall volume, fullness, and skin tone. PRP improves overall quality, tightness, and texture of the skin rather than filling individual deeper wrinkles.

What should you expect following your PRP treatment for hair restoration?

Because PRP injections promote healing or growth, you may not notice a difference right away. You can expect hair regrowth after about three months. On average, Dr. Miles recommends two to three sessions for the best results. She may need to perform a maintenance session as well biannually or annually.
