Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox®, short for botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin that cosmetically reduces the appearance of facial lines like forehead wrinkles, crow’s-feet and laugh lines. As you age, your facial muscles strengthen from all of those smiles and frowns, and it leaves you with deeper wrinkles. By minimizing your muscular contractions and relaxing your face, Botox reduces the appearance of your wrinkles.

What can you expect during your Botox procedure?

First, Dr. Miles talks with you about the area you’d like to smooth out so she can come up with a treatment plan. Then using a small needle, she simply injects the Botox into the targeted facial muscle. You’ll feel only a little pinch, and the process usually only takes a few minutes. You can return to your day as soon as Dr. Miles is finished with the injections.

You might see results in the first day or two after the procedure, but it can take from three days to two weeks to notice the full effects of the treatment.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

Botox should stay on the job for 4-6 months. Your wrinkles will start to reappear as the muscle gradually regains strength. The more injections you receive over time, the more your muscles are trained to relax.

Dr. Miles also offers Dysport® and Xeomin®, which are neurotoxins along the lines of Botox.  These neurotoxins, in addition to other cosmetic dermatological services like dermal fillers or platelet-rich plasma treatment, can effectively smooth your skin and combat the toll of aging.
